Yearly Activities

Charity Drives:
Every year members of the HHCC are invited to participate in our three charity drives:

  1. Chemo Caps for the Danbury Hospital.  This drive is called "Hats from the Heart" and is presented to the hospital around Valentine's day.  Members are asked to print out and use these labels for each hat donated: http://www.freewebs.com/crochetclubinct/HatsFromTheHeartLabels.pdf
  2. Preemie Caps & Blankets for the Danbury Hospital.  This drive takes place during the spring/summer months since the items are small.  Donation is presented in the fall.
  3. Hats, Scarves & Mittens and new, unwrapped toys for the Salvation Army located in Danbury.  This drive helps deliver warmth and cheer during the holiday season. (image on right from 1st HHCC donation ever made to Salvation Army; 2002.)

If there is great interest for the group to take on another charity, members are encouraged to present it to the body for voting.  Individual charity giving is encouraged, and yarn from the group's "Yarn Bank" may be awarded.

 


Classes, Workshops, and Field Trips:
The HHCC presents various how-to classes, Workshops with designers (such as: Melissa Leapman, Maire Treanor, Lily Chin, Doris Chan, and Margaret Hubert), and field trips from time to time.   

Field trips include "Yarn Shop Hops," Stitches East, NY Sheep & Wool Festival, MA Sheep & Wool Festival, and more.


Demonstrations:
The HHCC takes great pride in promoting the art of crochet, ususally offering free beginner lessons at these events.  Some of the events the HHCC has demonstrated at:

  • The Eastern States Exposition, West Springfield, Mass. (2002 - current)
  • The Connecticut Sheep & Wool Festival, Tolland, CT (2007- current)
  • The CYCA's  Knit Out & Crochet Too, New York City, NY. (2003 - 2006)
  • The CraftAdventure, West Springfield, Mass. (2002 - 2006)
  • "Girl Scouts Crochet For a Day," Brookfield, CT (2004)
  • CGOA's "Girl Scouts Crochet For a Day," Chicago, IL (2003)

Casual Gatherings:
A monthly gathering at the Borders book store located in Brookfield is held, non~members are welcomed to participate!  These gatherings take place on the 1st Wednesday of every month, in the morning from 10:00 AM - Noon, and in the evening from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM.  As of March, 2009, a second monthly morning gathering has started, meeting on every 3rd Wednesday of the month from 10:00 AM - Noon.   

2009 HHCC Calendar

Meetings normally take place every 2nd Sunday of the month.  Due to Easter, Mother's Day, and the CGOA Conference, the meeting dates in April, May and August have changed to the 3rd Sunday.  Activities taking place outside of the monthly meetings are highlighted in gold.

January 11:  meeting canceled due to weather.
February 8: bring chemo caps, and make some during the meeting for the "Hats from the Heart" campaign benefiting the Danbury Hospital.
March 8: bring scraps of yarn to the meeting and crochet leaves for the Tree Project.
March 1-31: Crochet Display at the Bethel Library
March 21: Free beginner crochet lesson, and Tunisian workshop at Bethel Library.
April 19: closed meeting for members only: special sock workshop with Kim Kotary
    April 25:  100th Connecticut Sheep & Wool Festival.  HHCC in White Barn offering Fee beginner crochet lessons, demo on Tunisian crochet, and crocheting with unspun roving.
    May 3: To be rescheduled.    Field Trip to NYC to visit Lion Brand Store.
May 17: bring a project to work on while listening to Guest Speaker, Willena Nanton, of the NYCCG.
   June 11: Salvation Army Thank You Luncheon.
June 14:  Special Visitor:  Jack Blumenthal of Lion Brand; Members will work on creating butterflies for the Butterfly Project.
July 12: This will be an **AWAY** meeting, hosted by HHCC member, Chava.  Those interested in attending, please contact the HHCC for directions.  Members are asked to bring yarn to swap, and to crochet chemo caps.
    August 1:  Last day to send in entry forms for The Big E Crochet Competion.

    August 6-9:  Members attending the 15th Annual CGOA Conference in Buffalo, NY.
August 16:  NOTE MEETING DATE CHANGE!  Special Guests: Linda & Tom Diak of Grafton Fibers!  ***Items to be entered into The Big E Crochet Competion must be brought to this meeting to comply with hand-delivery.
    September 12: Items for The Big E to be hand-delivered; stopover at WEBs.
September 13: This will be an AWAY meeting -- for information please contact HHCC.
    September 23: HHCC Crochet Demo in the New England State Building at The Big E! 
October 11: TBA
November 8:  closed meeting for members only: special workshop "Crocheted Tips, Tricks and Hints" with Lily Chin in honor of HHCC's 8th Anniversary.  Details to be announced.
    December 3: Tentative date for Salvation Army donation.
December 13:  Holiday Celebration.  Details to be announced.
